Russell Brand legal trouble, explained: Comedian charged with rape, sexual assault

In April, Brand was charged with five counts of sexual assault — two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault — after police investigators uncovered numerous alleged incidents dating back to 1999.

The criminal probe followed a growing body of reporting in the British press that accused Brand of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Detectives, who began their investigation in September 2023, claimed that Brand assaulted four women from 1999 to 2005: a rape in 1999, an indecent assault in 2001, an oral rape and sexual assault in 2004 and another sexual assault between 2004 and 2005.

The broadcaster, comedian and actor previously pleaded not guilty to five charges including two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault in relation to four women.

Mr Brand, 50, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 20 January 2026 in relation to the two new charges.

Detectives began investigating allegations into Mr Brand which came to light following reporting from the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4's Dispatches in September 2023.

The two new charges allegedly took place in 2009 and relate to separate women, the CPS said.

A trial is set to start at Southwark Crown Court on 16 June 2026 for the five original charges which allegedly took place on dates spanning between 1999 and 2005 in central London and Bournemouth.

Mr Brand, of Oxfordshire, is accused of raping one woman in Bournemouth in 1999, and indecently assaulting another in the Westminster area by grabbing her arm and dragging her towards a male toilet in 2001.

A third charge alleges he sexually assaulted a woman by kissing and groping her in Westminster between 2004 and 2005, while the remaining counts relate to the alleged oral rape and sexual assault of an additional woman in 2004 in the Westminster area.

In an Instagram video posted Tuesday, Dec. 23, Brand seemed to address the new charges, telling followers that "this is a time of great darkness" and calling out people who use "bureaucracy increasingly to legitimize authority."

"I feel so blessed that I have the opportunity to atone for the many things over the years that I did wrong, and the opportunity to ensure that people understand the truth of my situation and scenario," he said to the camera while driving.

However, earlier this year Russell caused controversy with gay rights campaigners when he branded a collection of Cambridge University students "Harry Potter poofs" during a talk at the education establishment.

While trying to get the 800-strong crowd to be quiet, he said: "Shut up you Harry Potter poofs."

His remark did not go down well with president of the university's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) group CUSU LGBT+, who said the star had been "plain offensive."

Speaking in a podcast interview, which was unearthed last year, he also said: "I thought, 'I think of myself as heterosexual but perhaps that's 'cause of the environment that I grew up in where homosexuality may have been difficult for me to express."

We don't mind who Russell dates but we can't imagine he'll be shaking his reputation as a ladies' man any time soon.
