New! Without the tremendous support, vision, and hard work of the club representatives present, there would be no Diving for Life today.

Patrick anxiously awaited our return and had even purchased a VCR so he could watch the jamboree video the moment we returned.

The proceeds of the event are donated to charitable organizations designated by local dive clubs. “Nonprofit status also enhances our credibility and public trust, underscoring that we are committed to transparency, accountability and serving the public good. Two days before we were to leave, Patrick was hospitalized with PCP pneumonia. The consensus seemed to be that they couldn’t find ‘dive buddies’ whose company they enjoyed, or they were not aware of the extensive shore diving available in their area.

My dream is to foster a member-led, long-lasting organization that makes a difference within our LGBTQIA+ community, but also on the reefs and in the environments we love.”

Andre Saade

One day Andre asked Christopher “what if I learned how to scuba dive?” He had been listening to Christopher passionately reminisce about his scuba trips.

Andre wanted to find out for himself.

The problem solver within came to life and Out Scuba became a necessity.

“I’d like for others to discover the beauty of the ocean and the warmth of our community.

“Underwater photographers (like me!) can showcase our work at general meetings, technical divers can reveal the wonders they see beyond recreational dive limits, and conservation leaders can help us to understand the state and nature of surrounding reefs. He wanted to be able to disconnect and enjoy the wonders of the planet.

Friends who share our values, humor, and lifestyle.

New friends are what we make on our Undersea Expeditions, exploring the world and having a great time doing it.

We dive the clear, warm waters of our planet’s most exciting and exotic locations in the company of friends. While there have been many attempts to create groups that served the same population and interests, previous groups have folded when primary members moved on.

He was new to the Fort Lauderdale area and had met numerous people who had been scuba certified for years but had not been diving for a while. Sadly, Patrick never left the hospital, but it was with relief that he did get to see his final dream become a reality.

It seems insufficient to pay tribute to Patrick Kelly - winning amateur figure skater; Producer of Michael Callen’s Legacy CD; and lover of all things turquoise.

Perhaps one of the things I admired most about Patrick was his understanding of the importance of leaving a legacy — not just any legacy -— but one which would bring joy to so many participants, while providing support to so many in need.

A group of gay and lesbian South Florida scuba enthusiasts have launched nonprofit Out Scuba, with a mission to create a safe, welcoming space in which LGBTQIA+ divers can explore the underwater world, connect with like-minded adventurers, and promote diversity, inclusion, and marine conservation in the scuba diving community.

“We are a vibrant and inclusive community of LGBTQIA+ scuba divers and ocean lovers,” says Christopher Duncan, a Fort Lauderdale small business owner who is helping spearhead Out Scuba, “dedicated to bringing together like-minded divers for unforgettable adventures, advocacy and lifelong connections.”

Initially focused in and around Fort Lauderdale and South Florida, Duncan says the group will serve not only members in and around that area, but also those who come to the area to enjoy one of the longest and most diverse barrier reef systems in the world.

“Ocean Nerd” Duncan often refers back to an organization for gay men who like to backpack and camp – and of which he served as president, 2007 & 2008 – when describing his operational vision for Out Scuba. We offer trips for all levels of divers, from instruction for new divers to advanced destinations for the experienced.

For now, reefs and wrecks of Broward County are home base.

Vision

Our vision is to foster acceptance and self-expression within the LGBTQIA+ diving community, advocating for environmental sustainability, and celebrating diversity. Thanks to Diving For Life Jamborees, LGBTQ+ Scuba Divers from around the globe have helped to raise OVER $1.5 MILLION dollars!!

Patrick had many dreams and those who knew him knew he dreamt in Technicolor with digital Dolby surround sound.

Throughout the year of 1993, Patrick worked tirelessly planning the next jamboree. In October all systems were "go" for the Second Annual Diving for Life Scuba Jamboree at Captain Don’s Habitat in Bonaire.

We want to create a fellowship that outlasts us.

With that in mind, Out Scuba was incorporated and registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization, built with a governance structure based on other successful community nonprofits. Needless to say, the event was a tremendous success and an extremely emotional one at that.

We, and representatives of the other five gay and lesbian scuba clubs in attendance, pulled together to form the initial board of directors for Diving for Life.
