The theory that Luke Skywalkeris gay has long circulated in the Star Wars fanbase, but could this really be the case? It's difficult to identify where exactly this theory began and why, although there are some very well-known posts that have made the rounds online, particularly ones referencing Luke's original trilogy outfits.

For some, this statement, however open-ended it was, seemed to ignore Star Wars canon, particularly pertaining to Luke's feelings for Leia. He bought a ticket with his own money and started scratching it while the camera rolled.

Luke Isn't Canonically Gay, But The Possibility Has Meaning

Outside of Luke's feelings for Leia, he does not have a romantic relationship in Star Wars canon.

The answer, however, isn’t a simple yes or no because of little issues like the nature of subtext and fandom and corporate policies. Others, though, are accepting of LGBTQ+ stories but don't feel this is an accurate interpretation of Luke. It goes without saying that one's clothing doesn't automatically equate to their sexuality, and some of these posts seem to just be shared in good fun, but it does reflect the discourse surrounding the possibility of Luke being gay.

It's interesting that this theory dates back to the original trilogy in light of Luke's feelings for Leia in those movies, specifically the first two.

With such an extensive history and so much controversy surrounding this theory, the question remains: could Luke Skywalker really be gay in Star Wars, and what has legendary Luke actor Mark Hamill said on the matter?

This Theory Goes Back Decades

Star Wars is a franchise known for its theories and headcanons, and one of the most longstanding theories regarding Luke Skywalker is the idea that Luke could be gay.

The Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker edits were everywhere, and while still a minor ship, they do hold their own on Archive of Our Own. And then there was Stories of the Jedi and the Sith, an official collection of short stories about various Force-sensitive characters published in 2022. Everyone on the planet had seen the storyline between John Boyega’s escaped stormtrooper Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and begun publishing fanfiction about them, including Isaac himself—bless you, Oscar, we know you tried your best to make Stormpilot canon until the very end.

Essentially, Hamill's stance is that Star Wars is meant to be interpreted by the viewer, and Luke's sexuality, along with many other aspects of these stories, can be determined on an individual level. She has considered being in fandom a defining character trait since she was in middle school and wasn't old enough to read the fanfiction she was definitely reading and loves dragons, complex magic systems, unhinged female characters, tragic villains and good queer representation.

Andor showed us that with Vel Sarthas and Cinta Kaz. Representation is putting explicitly queer characters on screen and at the center of a story where they can’t be dismissed.

Luke was never shown to have romantic interest toward anyone in any of the Star Wars movies or TV shows, and that’s a fact. He remained in a vegetative state for 12 days, with doctors advising his family to turn off life support.

Of course, there's always the possibility that Luke could be bisexual without contradicting this unfortunate romantic arc for Luke, although Star Wars has already muddied the waters regarding what really happened between Luke and Leia. It is perhaps for that reason that, despite decades of stories about Luke in Star Wars movies and TV shows, along with countless Legends and canon books and comics, some questions and theories remain.

One of the most controversial but also the most persistent is the notion that Luke Skywalker could be gay.

This alone was controversial, however, because in Legends, Luke Skywalker had a wife named Mara Jade. In this Bangtan Sonyeondan sh*t for life. But he wasn't.

We don't need a canon answer to this question because the truth about Luke being gay can be in the eye of the viewer.

Some have argued this is proof Luke couldn't be gay (although he could be bisexual), but, as this is no longer canon, it makes Luke's sexuality once again ambiguous.
