On March 13, a bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud referred several petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages in the country to a constitution bench of five judges of the Supreme Court.

It also submitted that the SC had only decriminalised sexual intercourse between same-sex persons in its 2018 judgment, but had not legitimised this “conduct”. Many of my segments are born through observing my surroundings and analyzing everyday situations.

While the Union government has argued that the matter is best left to Parliament to deliberate and decide upon, the Supreme Court felt that the issues raised by these petitions were “seminal” and an “important matter”.

The SC bench said that the case involved “interplay” between constitutional rights of life, liberty, dignity, equal treatment of members of the LGBTQ+ community members and specific statutory enactments which considered only a married union between a biological man and woman.

Currently 32 countries around the world have legalised same-sex marriages, some through legislation while others through judicial pronouncements.

According to Bhuptani, there is no law or government scheme in planning or execution that actively discriminates against an oppressed group in India.

The Special Marriage Act provides a civil form of marriage for couples who cannot marry under their personal law. “When I see Modi, I see a father who is loving, caring and protective, who will go to any lengths to protect his child,” he noted. “I have firsthand seen the Gujarat model as a development model,” he said. Call it a civil partnership or call it Timbuctoo but give us our rights.” Due to the lack of legal recognition of queer partnerships, he says most queer people cannot hold joint bank accounts, property or insurance with their partner.

While one might encounter instances of anti-Semitism when actively seeking them in the news or online, I personally don't, making it less likely to come across my path.
