The protests that followed are credited with a shift in activism in the U.S. The following year saw some of the first Pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.

Pride marches and festivals have been taking place throughout the month in different parts of the U.S.
and around the world, and New York City's 2025 Pride March, honoring the legacy of Stonewall, drew big crowds on Sunday.
Here is a look at some of the events from NYC to Washington, D.C., to Kathmandu and beyond.

This weekend the 'Brussels Pride' is organized to demand equal rights for and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month, which officially begins on June 1, commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York and celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and the fight for equal rights.

The first Pride march in New York City took place in 1970, the year after the Stonewall Riots. And while the meaning or “purpose” of Pride may have shifted and changed over the years depending on America’s political and social climate at the time, visibility of LGBTQ people ― their identities and their relationships ― have always been at the heart of it.
