When Did Kevin Abstract Come Out And Why?

In an interview with MTV in 2014, Kevin Abstract came out as gay.

Kevin Abstract Joined Brockhampton When?

By the end of 2014, they had condensed their membership and changed their name to Brockhampton, after the street where Abstract grew up. Recording it was the first time I've ever felt that vulnerable in a studio, and I always get nervous every time I step up to the mic, so that was a brand new level of sharing,” he says.

In 2017, he released his debut solo album, American Boyfriend. 

The studio album was met with critical acclaim, and Abstract has been praised for his unique style and lyrical prowess. “We'll all keep going.”

Abstract’s next project is a solo record. Powerful, even. He’s penned his truth in verse since he was a teenager, oftentimes singing it to fans before he spoke it aloud to his loved ones.

“I'm in the same mindset, with that same hunger from 2017,” he says. The lyric speaks to his “Papercut” recording session, before those closest to him knew he was gay. When he was twelve years old, a boy by the name of Kevin caught his attention.

In 2010, when he was 13 years old, Abstract posted on the Kanye West fan forum KanyeToThe: “Anyone wanna make a band?” Between the responses to that and Abstract’s own high school friends, he cobbled together a group of young artists that included producers, rappers, singers, graphic designers, engineers, managers, and more.

Since the recording of his 2016 coming-of-age solo record American Boyfriend, Abstract has come out, migrated to Los Angeles, and embarked on (several) world tours. “I wrote that verse pretty fast and it just felt so necessary. “I didn't hide, but if any queer thought popped into my head, I would just run away from it,” he explains.

They became massively successful in their first year releasing music together, in 2017, and it didn’t take long before they were really stars.

A little more than one year after they dropped their first album, which failed to chart, they hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

He’s Openly Gay

Abstract has played a significant role in advocating for LGBTQ rights and representation in the music industry.

As an openly gay artist in a genre that has traditionally been less accepting of diversity — hip-hop — he has used his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance.

His authenticity in discussing his sexuality has made him a role model for many, and his music often explores themes of identity, love, and self-acceptance.

He has made a point of being open about his sexuality, as he wants fans who love hip-hop who are also members of the LGBTQ community to know they aren’t alone.

He Runs A Clothing Line

In addition to being creative when it comes to music, Abstract also launched a clothing brand called Video Store Apparel (or simply VSA) in 2021.

He started the business with his Brockhampton band member Romil Hemnani.

I ask him. That year alone, Brockhampton released three albums—the Saturation trilogy—back-to-back, all with electric beats and brilliant bars.
