This decadent blend of shea butter, mango butter, avocado oil and vitamin E begins thick and velvety, then melts into a warm, silken glide the moment it meets your skin. I am so impressed!"

  • "When showering, I fully expected to be greeted by a host of forest creatures, as if I was some kind of exceptionally hairy, amazing smelling, bearded Snow White."

  • "You can tell that they put a lot of thought and care into the products.

Soap operas were also something I bonded with my  mother over. There weren’t one or two queer characters, confined to a sanitized version of romance or a watered down existence. Last time I stocked up and bought one of each scent. Historically these programs have pushed the needle on perceived acceptability, ushering in stories that have shocked audiences while also fostering sympathy and understanding.

The powerful women and the seductive men offered an escape from a reality that was sometimes difficult to accept. Although the character was killed-off in 2022, Liv Dingle provided asexual representation, while also grappling with addiction, epilepsy, and relationship with abuse survivor, Vinny Dingle.

ITV’s Coronation Street has also featured a host of queer romances over the past decade, although the show most famously featured the first transgender character in a soap opera with the introduction of character Haley Cropper in 1998.

Suki has caused quite a stir during her time on the square. According to a recent Soaps.com article, representation in American soaps has improved, but there is still work to do. Never disappoints!"

I found transgender actors, asexual representation, and morally complex queer characters whose villainy wasn’t based around disguising their sexuality

Spoilers ahead for EastEnders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks

My personal favorite is the BBC’s EastEnders.

The ordeal brought them closer together and, against all odds, true love prevailed, with Dillon and Lucas – now known to fans as HayRay – embarking on a relationship together.

It’s not been all plain-sailing for the couple, with obstacles aplenty thrown their way – including Dillon having a baby with Lucas’ sister!

  • Jasmine Thomas and Debbie Dingle – Emmerdale

Vicar’s niece Jasmine Thomas and local hardman’s daughter Debbie Dingle were an unlikely match, but their relationship had us completely hooked.

They faced more ups and downs than the average couple, even by Emmerdale’s standards, but were at their peak when they worked together to cover up Jasmine’s murder of Shane Doyle.

    Now, that’s love.

Christian Clarke and Syed Masood – EastEnders

Christian Clarke and Syed Masood overcame countless hurdles and proved that love conquers all during their time together in EastEnders.

Their cultural differences made things difficult, with Syed’s family disapproving of the relationship between them, though thankfully they soon came round to the idea of Christian being part of Syed’s life.

The pair made things official with the show’s first-ever civil partnership in 2012, and went on to leave the Square together.

Sophie Webster and Sian Powers – Coronation Street

No Corrie fan is going to forget Sophie Webster and Sian Powers’ wedding-that-wasn’t any time soon, and we’re still secretly holding out hope that they may one day return to the cobbles and rekindle their romance.

There’s nothing quite like first love, and Sophie and Sian proved that with their powerful love story.

Kate Connor and Rana Habeeb – Coronation Street

Corrie has a habit of tearing lesbian couples apart on their wedding days, but before Rana Habeeb met her untimely demise beneath the factory roof, her relationship with Kate Connor was one of the most popular among fans of the show.

Like Christian and Syed, Kana overcame cultural differences and a dramatic affair to be together, only for their happiness to be cruelly ripped away.

    We’re still not over it.

Suki and Eve Panesar-Unwin – EastEnders

From failed lesbian weddings to a major success story, Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) had us jumping for joy when they finally tied the knot earlier this year.

Since escaping abusive husband Nish Panesar, Suki has finally been able to live life as her true self, having found happiness and safety with Eve.

It’s been a long journey for the couple, with fans heaping praise on the way Suki’s coming out story was handled, and we have our fingers crossed that they will stay together for a long time yet.

Charity Dingle and Vanessa Woodfield – Emmerdale

Charity Dingle’s (Emma Atkins) relationship with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) came as a complete surprise to absolutely everyone, but they very quickly became one of the soap’s most popular pairings.

Their love story allowed the show to cover same-sex adoption when Charity adopted Vanessa’s son Johnny.

Past storylines have seen her character seduce her bisexual daughter’s boyfriend, lie about having cancer, and scheme to have her own son sent to prison. After a prolonged secret affair that included a murder attempt and Suki escaping from the marriage to her abusive husband, Nish, the two women have finally found themselves in a committed relationship that has drawn praise from fans.

Other queer characters on the soap include Callum Highway, a gay cop married to recently departed bad boy, Ben Mitchell.

The couple has endured many challenges, including arrests, sexual assault and a storyline shedding light on men affected by eating disorders. I’m glad to have found a new source of comfort watching in the world of British soap operas. Nicky made a full recovery following the accident and departed the village to travel the world with his boyfriend, Suni Sharma.

The program has recently garnered attention for a storyline focusing on Matty Barton, a transgender man navigating the difficulty of the prison system after being falsely accused of stabbing another character.
